Can I paint my Anderson windows?
The exterior frame of Andersen® casement and awning windows is covered with rigid vinyl. Paints and stains may cause damage to the rigid vinyl exteriors. Sandtone or Terratone® color frame exteriors may be painted any color lighter than Terratone color using quality oil-base or latex paint.
Vinyl is not an easy surface to paint, and it tends to repel liquids like paint. As a result, you need to sand the window frames prior to painting them to help the paint adhere. You can use 220 or 240-grit sandpaper.
- Vinyl is plastic. Therefore, spray paint that specifically adheres to plastic should work for this project. Fabric spray paint is more flexible than any other spray paint, but it is more expensive. The longevity of your project might be extended if you opt for fabric spray paint.
- Eight premium exterior colors in addition to traditional white and tan, means you can coordinate colors with your exterior trim, siding and stucco. All windows with Milgard Premium Exterior Vinyl Finishes have a white interior. Exterior Standard colors are available with matching white or tan interiors.
- When the area is prepared, the first thing you need to do is apply a metal etching primer on the frames with a latex paint brush. This primer is important because without it, the colour won't stick to your window frames. There, your aluminium windows look brand new, just like they were newly installed.
Many homeowners are not aware that vinyl siding can be successfully painted. Applying paint to vinyl siding improves its durability, and is actually less labor-intensive than painting wood, masonry, or hardboard surfaces. Because the siding does not retain moisture, it is easy to clean and dries quickly.
- Painting Mobile and Manufactured Home Walls. The panels aren't made of the same material found in stick-built homes, but that doesn't mean you can't paint them! Manufactured homes often use vinyl on gypsum wall panels or VOG panels.
- It's OK to paint vinyl (window frames, shutters, siding or trim) as long as you follow a few rules. The first consideration is color. Vinyl has the potential to warp when over-heated. This affect is most common on larger areas like siding.
- It can be applied to many surfaces and it adheres well to faux leather. Acrylic paint does not fade as easily as other paints. It is also flexible, making it is less likely to crack over time. Choose a leather paint.

- It is smart to fill fastener holes in the PVC trim before painting. Fill small holes with an exterior filler and lightly sand it smooth after it dries.
