Can acupuncture be bad for you?

The risks of acupuncture are low if you have a competent, certified acupuncture practitioner using sterile needles. Common side effects include soreness and minor bleeding or bruising where the needles were inserted. The fatalities are usually due to an acupuncture needle penetrating a vital organ. This, in turn, can cause pneumothorax cardiac tamponade or major haemorrhage. A needle penetrated her lung and the patient died of tension pneumothorax.
