Are there any deserted islands?

There are still many abandoned and uninhabited islands around the world. After all, 270 people live on Tristan de Cunha, which is 2430 kilometers from the next inhabited island! The reasons islands remain uninhabited are financial, political, environmental, or religious -or a combination of those reasons.

Keeping this in consideration, how many unpopulated islands are there in the world?

There may be as many as a couple million uninhabited islands in the world: the total of all sea, lake, and river islands could be 1-2 million, and all but 11,000 or so are uninhabited. Sweden, for instance, counts 221,831 islands within its borders, and only 1,145 have people living on them.

Who owns Bouvet Island?

The first Norvegia expedition landed on the island in 1927 and claimed it for Norway. At this time the island was named Bouvet Island, or "Bouvetøya" in Norwegian. After a dispute with the United Kingdom, it was declared a Norwegian dependency in 1930. It became a nature reserve in 1971.

Where are the Phoenix Islands located?

The Phoenix Islands or Rawaki are a group of eight atolls and two submerged coral reefs, lying in the central Pacific Ocean east of the Gilbert Islands and west of the Line Islands. They are a part of the Republic of Kiribati.
