Are smoothies considered a meal?
A smoothie is considered a liquid meal. It's really both a drink and a food, blended up for optimal digestion. Of course, if it's healthy depends on the ingredients blended up. If it's not something you usually chew, I consider it a drink.
Water is digested immediately followed by fruit and vegetables which are generally digested within 40 minutes. If you added oats and nuts or seeds it may take up to 3 hours to digest. However this assumes you are only drinking green smoothies in your entire diet.
- Drinking a fruit smoothie doesn't fill you up the same way that eating whole fruit does. Liquid meals empty from the stomach more quickly than solid foods, which can leave you feeling hungry sooner. Fruit juice smoothies pack in more calories and (natural) sugars than those made with whole fruit.
- Consuming Watermelon takes about 20 minutes to complete digestion in our stomach.Consuming Vitamin C fruits like Oranges, grapefruit, grapes takes about 30 minutes to finish digestion in our stomach.Other fruits like Apples, pears, peaches, cherries takes about 40 minutes to complete the digest in our intestine.
- 24 to 72 hours
