The other well-known chilies – jalapenos, serranos, poblanos – are known for another characteristic. Vegetable seems a better fit. Chilies, with their internal, edible seeds, are most definitely a fruit. Along with tomatoes, zucchini, okra, and eggplant, they are the most common fruits-eaten-like vegetables.
What vegetable is really fruit?
So, if you didn't know, here are five foods that you thought were vegetables but are actually fruits.
- Tomatoes. This is one of the most commonly mistaken ingredients.
- Bell Peppers. Bell peppers are actually fruits and so are cucumbers, green beans and red chillies!
- Green peas.
- Lady's Fingers.
Actually, they are both! According to the U.S. Supreme Court, because they have seeds, pickles are technically a “fruit of the vine”. However, because they are made from cucumbers, they are generally known as a vegetable.
Zucchini. In a culinary context, the zucchini is treated as a vegetable; it is usually cooked and presented as a savory dish or accompaniment. Botanically, zucchinis are fruits, a type of botanical berry called a "pepo", being the swollen ovary of the zucchini flower.
The onion (Allium cepa L., from Latin cepa "onion"), also known as the bulb onion or common onion, is a vegetable that is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Allium. Its close relatives include the garlic, shallot, leek, chive, and Chinese onion.
Some fruits and seeds that do not meet the botanical definition but are nuts in the culinary sense are: Almonds are the edible seeds of drupe fruits — the leathery "flesh" is removed at harvest. Brazil nut is the seed from a capsule. Pecan is the seed of a drupe fruit.
Avocadoes, string beans, squash, eggplant, green pepper and okra are all technically fruits, Litt says. On the other hand, rhubarb is not a fruit. Let's not even start with strawberries just yet. OK, in the world of botany, a fruit is the structure that bears the seeds of a plant.
Cilantro is an annual herb from the family Apiaceae, which contains 3,700 species including carrots, celery, and parsley. In the United States, the leaves of the plant are known as cilantro (the Spanish translation) and the seeds are called coriander. Cilantro is also commonly known as Chinese parsley.
Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning, known as a peppercorn.
#1 – The Carolina Reaper 2,200,000 SHU. As of August, 2013, Guinness World Records stated that Smokin' Ed's Carolina Reaper® is officially the world's hottest chile pepper. Originally named the “HP22BNH7”, bred by cultivator Ed Currie, who runs PuckerButt Pepper Company in Fort Mill, South Carolina.
It is hotter, but not crazily so. Both hot sauces fall in the low-jalapeño range of heat: Tabasco at approximately 2,500 SHU and Sriracha at around 2,200 SHU. Jalapeño peppers range from 2,500 to 8,000 Scoville heat units for comparison.
By this definition, a cucumber is a fruit. It develops from the flower of the cucumber plant and contains the seeds. This also means that lots of other “vegetables” are also fruits: beans, peppers, pumpkins, peas, and of course, tomatoes.
Vegetables are usually grouped according to the portion of the plant that is eaten such as leaves (lettuce), stem (celery), roots (carrot), tubers (potato), bulbs (onion) and flowers (broccoli). A fruit is the mature ovary of a plant. So a tomato is botanically a fruit but is commonly considered a vegetable.
Both. A banana (the yellow thing you peel and eat) is undoubtedly a fruit (containing the seeds of the plant: see 'Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?), though since commercially grown banana plants are sterile, the seeds are reduced to little specks.
Same with a banana, plum etc. Hence a tomato is a fruit. A vegetable like the carrot, flowers and produces seeds externally, usually in the form of a seed bud from the flower. Carrot is biennial, flowering in the second year, above ground.
Fruits and vegetables contain important vitamins, minerals and plant chemicals. They also contain fibre. A diet high in fruit and vegetables can help protect you against cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
'Potatoes are botanically classified as a vegetable, but they are classified nutritionally as a starchy food,' says a DoH spokesperson. 'This is because when eaten as part of a meal, they are generally used in place of other starchy carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta or rice.
The smoother the pepper, the younger, less stressed, and milder it is. Left on the plant (and even after picked) green jalapeños will eventually turn red. So red jalapeños are older than green jalapeños. The flesh of the chile that is closer to the seeds will be hotter than the flesh near the tip.
Fact: While it's generally thought of as a vegetable, eggplant is actually a fruit. The eggplant, aubergine, melongene, brinjal or guinea squash is a plant of the family Solanaceae. Eggplant is grown for its usually egg-shaped fleshy fruit and is eaten as a cooked vegetable. Some even consider it a berry.
